New VIDEO page at www.daughterofdesign.com

Pictures can really capture a moment but video can capture the atmosphere. There's nothing like seeing flickering candle lights and hearing people's voices. I'm a big proponent for videography if you couldn't tell.

Well this all being said we thought it'd be great to share some of the videos from our recent weddings with you.

Grab some popcorn, dim the lights, sit back and enjoy :)

Net-A-Porter's new Wedding Boutique

One of our designer friends, Michelle Rahn just alerted us to Net-A-Porter's new Wedding Boutique. For those of you who aren't familiar, Net-A-Porter is your online luxury fashion destination and now your online luxury BRIDAL fashion destination as well.

Their magazine is like a wedding stylist's look book. There are some great fashion tips to borrow from here and a few planning tips. However keep in mind this site is for the global shopper so some vendor tips may not be local but can still be inspiring!

You can find everything from Halston and Vivienne Westwood wedding dresses to Lanvin and Temperly Veils. If you're a fashionista every day of your life why would you stop at your wedding day!

Here are a few of my favorite pieces I found online right now:

Halston, Metallic jersey asymmetrical dress

Lanvin, tiered silk-gazar dress

Adam, beaded-bib necklace

Bijoux Heart, 24-karat gold-plated crystal earrings

They also have dresses for bridesmaids, mothers and guests but I'll be honest I'm not totally wild about the entire selection but it's a start and I'm looking forward to seeing what they add on! Maybe men's bridal fashion?

Google's wedding document templates

Google has come out with wedding document templates. I didn't end that sentence with an exclamation mark on purpose. I like the concept they're reaching for and I'm sure it'll develop and improve as it is used and they receive feedback from users but I'm going to be honest, I think it's a little inadequate for them to be launching already. I think they need to advise a few more people who have been in the trenches of planning.

Here is my feedback:

Guest List

+ You can easily send out an address form for your guests to fill out that goes right back to your spread sheet and address book
+ You can add and customize the template as you wish.
- But you need to use Google contacts or gmail to easily use this feature.
- For the address form you should have two cells for first name and last name. It will make sorting a million times easier
- Their "elegant" themes for the emailer are not so elegant. Google, remember this is for a wedding not a weekend bbq.

Budget Estimator
+ I like this for a quickie overview.
- But of course for each couple it's different; what counts most and where do they want to invest their budget more? Are you foodies? Big on decor? Gotta have that dress?

Budget
+ This budget is a great check list of the little things you will have to consider for your wedding and budget: aisle runners, guest parking, childcare...
- It's a bit micro for my tastes. I'm all for being detailed but I think for a budget sheet this breaks out the cost of each category a bit too much.
- They spelled altar as "alter"! I know, I'm just being my type A self right now.

To-Do
+ The cells automatically change color depending on what stage you're at. If you're in "progress" it's yellow, "late" pink,...
- I thought they would add some standard to-do's for starters but it's a clean slate for you to fill in.

Venue
+ ... I can't think of anything positive to say
- That's all that's important? How many hours and cost for what - site, per person, minimum f&b? What about capacity? Oh man, Google, call me. My venue research sheet has about 50 more questions that you can borrow some from.

Photographer, Cake, Dress, etc.
+ I suppose these are a good start but...
- ...user beware! There are tons of more questions to ask.

Music List
+ It gives a general idea of a few places you will need music.
- They should also add a "do not play list"

Photo List
+ It's a good explanation for couples wondering what a photo list is and gives good general suggestions of groupings

Wedding Day Time line
+ Good overview for someone who wants to know the general flow of a wedding.
- This is somewhere that I like to get super micro on the timing and details. But that's why our time lines average about 10 pages and that's single spaced people.

Bridal Market Week in NYC

A few weeks following Fall Fashion week comes Bridal Market Week. Top wedding industry professionals gather to attend fashion shows, dinner parties, and cocktail parties. And you know, we're in an industry of planning wonderful events so you can imagine the ones we throw for ourselves. Anyhow I thought I'd share a few pictures from this past week.

Marcey Brownstein Catering presents "The Bounty of New York"

It was a complete honor to be a guest at this dinner with truly the wedding world's best! Shira, the Real Weddings Editor from Martha Stewart's Blog sums it up best in her entry "Fall Fete" where Daughter of Design gets a little mention woohoo! Here are a few more pictures:

Isn't this place SICK! I mean, on top of this view (pun intended) it was warmest night in October and simply one of the most magical places to be in New York City: 620 Loft & Garden

Brooklyn Bride, Daughter of Design, Amy Atlas, 100LayerCake, Martha Stewart Weddings

BORROW THIS IDEA: I loved Marcey's escort card roulette. All the cards were turned face down and when you picked it up you saw your seating arrangement. This solves the issue of anyone being upset they weren't sat next to such and such or weren't at the good part of the room. I have to say lady luck was on my side and I sat next to Marcy Blum, One Girl Cookie, Xochitl from Always a Bridesmaid and Sarah True of True Events. The fun continued during dinner when our entrees were removed underneath some had another piece of paper with a new number so you had an opportunity to sit next to a group of new amazing people. I wouldn't suggest this for a wedding but maybe a small rehearsal dinner it could be a fun idea.

Special thanks to Roey Yohai Photography for all the amazing pictures from the Brownstein dinner event!

Martha Stewart 15th Anniversary Party at The Plaza, NYC

It's unanimous. This was THE event of the week if not the year. It was a thousand of not just the city's but the world's top planners, photographers, designers, etc. It's one of those times when an awful thought like what would happen to the wedding world if this room blew up, I know morbid sorry but that's how impressive the crowd was. Here are a few pictures:

Romantic, fashion forward, contemporary, soft...

She's baaaack~ and making a splash!

SAVE THE DATE! War Memorial Opera House, SF

I rarely write about weddings until it's already passed and I can post the pictures but I just can't contain myself on this one! Next July, Daughter of Design will be doing a wedding at the War Memorial Opera House, home of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet. They only allow two weddings per year so to be one of them is an extreme honor. The couple are season ticket holders and actually came here to an opera on their first date so how perfect is that!

For me this has extra significance in that I started my event career here nearly 10 years ago. I worked in Marketing and Special Events for 2 years and have the warmest and fondest memories of the San Francisco Opera and my old "office". It's like coming home...

Check back here July 2010 for photos!

Bowery Hotel - preferred vendor list!

I'm excited to announce that Daughter of Design has been added to the Bowery Hotel recommended vendor list! I look forward to planning many amazing events there in the future. It is truly one of my favorite event spaces in New York City and I'm honored that they included me in their list.

Daughter of Design is voted # 1 in NYC

To be honest, I don't know what www.bizvotes.com is but all I know is that according to them Daughter of Design is voted # 1 in NYC currently and that makes them okay in my book. Forget that only a total of like 10 people have voted so far, it's only important that most of those 10 voted for little ol' me! And I swear I wasn't the one who casted all the votes (okay well maybe one but that was just to see how to vote - purely research). Click here to see for yourself:
