Berkshire-Lenox Tour & Design Challenge

I had the great pleasure of being invited to tour some amazing properties in Lenox, MA as part of a get to know the Berkshires trip. It is the perfect 2 hour getaway from the city and the charming, local kind of town you would want your wedding guests to experience. It is a cultural mecca, consider it a more refined Woodstock!

All the planners who came on the trip had the pleasure of being hosted by different B&B's and estates. I felt extremely honored to be a guest at The Winthrop Estate. The proprietors Jamie and Ethan Berg were the greatest hosts and have a level of service, style and sophistication that is infused in every detail of your stay with them.

As part of our trip we were asked to participate in a design challenge inspired by an invitation set we received from Crane, who is actually local to the area. We used local rentals from Classical Tents and had flowers donated to us by Sea Groatt Riccardi, a local flower wholesaler. Also I pilfered amazing antiques and decor items from around Winthrop Estate as part of my table design and really wanted to reflect the Berg's enthusiasm for interior design in my concept. Here's how it all came together!

This is a wood table in the foyer of the Estate and chairs from their music room. I kept the 2 lamps that were already on the table. The forest green napkins are from Classical Tents as are the gold rim plates and glassware. I added a olive colored ribbon a a napkin ring. The gold candlesticks and books are all items I picked up around the house. The silver candlesticks however I brought from home and are from IKEA! I love mixing metals! Also I added the black ribbon on the candlestick to soften the look a little and add a little whimsy. I mixed the colors of the candlesticks as well to give it a slightly more fashionable and contemporary vibe. For flowers I ordered eucalyptus which I'm obsessed with at the moment and white lilies along with some Salal and Ruscus leaves for fullness. I used an antique urn as a vase for the centerpiece!

HELPFUL TIP: Look around your house for items you can use to decorate a holiday table! You'll be amazed at what you can put together from things you already have lying around the house!

Jamie let me use their family heirloom silverware that has their monogram engraved in each piece!

And a portrait of me sitting at my table. (Had I known we would be taking photos with us in it I might have splashed on a little make up!)

Lake Como wedding video!

Testament to why everyone needs wedding video. I can't stress enough how much I love it and how different it is from photography. I have so many clients who regret not having it during their wedding. The speeches alone are reason alone to have video.

Marla + Mark - 632 on Hudson, NYC

632 on Hudson is easily one of my favorite venues to work with in NYC and you'll see why. There are so many beautiful antiques in the house for couples to use. Marla and Mark complimented the decor with their own beautiful and MEANINGFUL touches!

Marla and Mark are a beautiful couple! I'll let the pictures do the talking!

Mom does our famous calligraffiti on the mirrors! Their wedding was based on a beautiful concept of "We do" that incorporated their guests and family to create a communal union.

The beautiful blue portrait above the fireplace was painted by the groom's late mother. It was a great way to incorporate her memory and work into their wedding day.

Acquloina Catering did an amazing and delicious job! Look at this spread!

In memory of the bride's father who was a big time fisherman, the centerpieces incorporated beta fish...one of which who now lives with me!

Corinne + Noberto - Bowery Hotel, NYC

Corinne and Noberto, your wedding was amazing because you chose a great venue (Bowery Hotel), had an excellent photographer (Susan Stripling), looked stunning (Ines di Santo), and because you loved all the crazy ideas we threw at you!

We were tapping into Bowery's old-world vibe to create this scene of an upscale dinner party at a fictional historic South American plantation mansion.

Your pictures look like they're in an ad campaign! Seriously!

HELPFUL TIP: Maybe you have a more classic style to your invitation but it's all about accessorizing it with something like these awesome papers we found that were cut to be envelope liners. Look for what we did with the rest of the paper coming up!

Their STD chronicled the key dates in their relationship. One side was in English and the other was in Spanish for his side of the family from Argentina!

Ah! This photo gets me every time. Daddy seeing how grown up his little girl is!

BORROW THIS IDEA: For menus, we had this idea to tea stain regular paper doilies and then stamp each using a large custom made stamp with the menu that we had the calligrapher write out. Bake to dry faster! Corinne also ironed them to flatten them out. Remember to leave enough time to get the menu finalized, have your calligrapher write it out, get a stamp made and then a night of DIY fun to actually put it all together!

BORROW THIS IDEA: You know how I love calligraffiti so we came up with the idea to rent all these vintage mirrors from Props for Today (I've had other non NYC brides also just buy theirs from flea markets) and then had the calligrapher write the number on each.

HELPFUL TIP: What I want you to notice about this picture is what you DON'T see. There are outlet plugs, AC controls and other unsightly gadgets strategically hidden behind these props and frames. Make it picture perfect and try to conceal anything that could ruin the look! I don't think old plantation mansions had central air.

BORROW THIS IDEA:We ordered different men's and women's hankies and had each stitched with the guests name. Tucked inside each hankie was a handwritten letter from the bride and groom which thanked them for attending and told them what table they were going to be sat at. People of course saved these hankies and took them home as favors!

We replaced Bowery's bathroom signs with our own Latin verions!

I just absolutely love this picture. I don't know what it is about it but I think it looks so timeless!

So what do you think? Does it look like an old-world, rich South American dinner party? I think you said yes right?

BORROW THIS IDEA: We made napkin rings with the extra paper from the envelope liners!

1st New Year's Eve Wedding in Times Square

Several months ago we were chosen by Get Married to help plan the first wedding EVER to be held in Times Square as part of the Waterford ball drop televised festivities. What ensued was a once in a lifetime experience!

The lucky couple, Bethany and Geoffrey, met in Iraq and now live in Florida. They were chosen from thousands of applicants on Getmarried.com to be the first couple to get married in the middle of Times Square in front of millions of viewers.

Through support of amazing sponsors and vendors alike we were able to pull off this amazing, truly once-in-a-lifetime wedding AND in the middle of what is referred to as SNOWPOLCALYPSE 2010!! The couple had to DRIVE up because all flights were cancelled for the week of the wedding. (They really wanted to get married :)

There might have been city paralyzing snow fall but somehow Hatch Creative Studio was able to get its hands on out of season peonies and ranunculus!

Jeff Chastain on hair and Nam Vo on make up! She looked like a movie star. There's me going over last minute time line items with Bethany.

Thank god it turned out to be a mild night. Bethany was a trooper (pun intended) and went shrugless for the ceremony. Original Runner created these custom runners for Get Married.

Being escorted through the roaring crowds to the stage was pretty cool I have to say!

And back to the reception at the Hard Rock where Times Square Alliance also has their official afterparty. The likes of Ryan Seacrest attend and special performances by Cee Lo and Taio Cruz.

Duffy from Ace of Cakes donated this beautiful cake to the couple. We used the design and colors as the inspiration for the reception decor.

Hatch Creative Studio created a complimentary design to the cake that also said, "Hi I'm a NYC NYE party!"

Waterford, thank you for the beautiful plates, stemware and flatware!

Make Merry! Your menu/place cards were the perfect finishing touch!

Daisy & Justin - Laguna Beach, CA

Daisy and Justin met during college at UC, Berkeley (Go Bears!) and after years of dating and living in all parts of the country they finally got married at the beautiful Montage Laguna Beach.

For their Save the Date, the couple poked fun at how much they lived and moved around the world before choosing Laguna Beach as their wedding destination.

Their beautiful wedding invitations were designed by Minna Designs. We sent her a few pieces of Edwardian vintage jewelry as inspiration (below) and gave her the adjectives: Edwardian Era, bling, purple, silver and look what she came up with!

I used this camera phone picture in a previous post on Pretty Postage but just want to stress again how important all your postal accessories are to a perfect invitation set!

The groom gifted his groomsmen awesome cuff links at the rehearsal dinner the night before.

HELPFUL TIP: We promptly recollected them and told them we'd hang on to them until the wedding. Not that we didn't trust the groomsmen to not lose or forget to bring them...we just were taking no risks :). It's sometimes a good idea to have them under safe keeping!

A large part in why the couple chose to marry in Laguna Beach was so that it would be driving distance from the bride's family's home in Orange County. It is a Taiwanese tradition that the groom must pass several tests to earn his bride. Like he must...

Answer questions and puzzles correctly

Provide monetary gifts for the bridesmaids who guard the front door

conquer obstacle courses (and groomsmen need to help)

Sing on demand (hilarious the only song they all knew the lyrics to was Happy Birthday!)

Perform a dance routine (believe this one is loosely based off a Beyonce music video)

Obviously today the tradition is more lighthearted and in good humor but the groom nonetheless must prove himself to deserve his bride.

Daisy awaits in her childhood room for the husband she dreamed of as a little girl.

He passes all the tests! Whew!

They receive blessings and bow in respect of their elders

And pour and serve tea to each set of parents as part of the traditional Chinese tea ceremony.

Also as part of tradition the Aunt of the Bride hid a little something in the wedding night room of the bride and couple. Shhh!

The blue sky and water were a great part of our color story :)

Instead of a guest book, guests signed this beautiful chinese cloth.

Square Root Designs out of Irvine, CA did an amazing job creating the bride's vision to life!

HELPFUL TIP: At the rehearsal have the guys determine if they prefer doing hands forward or hands back so that they look more uniform during the ceremony.

I loved the softness and drama of the bride's dress!

These California sunset pictures are making this Cali girl miss home!

BORROW THIS IDEA: The escort card jacket panel is also a great idea when there is no place to put the escort cards where they won't get blown away by the ocean breeze.

HELPFUL TIP: If you have the space in your reception area, create a small lounge area by the dance floor and bar. Especially if you have a very social group who will want to mix, mingle and catch up this is a great place for them to do so while staying near the epicenter of the party and not retreating back to their tables.

Their ballroom was sexy and sweet all at once.

Menu cards were designed in the style of their invitations and really rooted the table decor with old-world elegance.

Later in the evening the bride changed into a reception dress which seemed like it was made for her! Again sexy and sweet :)

Daisy and Justin have moved again from Denver to San Francisco. We'll check in on them every so often to see where the road takes them next :)!

Amanda and Doug - Lake Como, Italy

This stunning wedding in Lake Como was just featured in Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine.

The bride and her ladies each wore a custom made headpiece from Lulu Frost. Each girl chose her own vintage charm for her piece.

Meet the groom. Doesn't he look sharp! Good job Tom Ford.

The groomsmen were all given ivory Brioni ties.

Time for the ladies to go to the wedding venue, Villa del Balbionello by private boat.

Too sweet! A telegram from grandparents who could not make the trip.

Here come the guests and dressed to kill!

The guests followed the invitation attire very strictly. It wasn't a wedding it was a couture fashion show!

The bride allowed each bridesmaid to select her own gown and color from the collection at Amsale. They looked equally lovely individually as they did as a group.

The beautiful ceremony at the Villa's Loggia.

A trio consisting of La Scala musicians were commissioned by Amanda and Doug to learn a number of meaningful songs for the ceremony including Sea of Love for the bride's processional.

BORROW THIS IDEA: The couple often used the term "James Bond" to describe how they wanted their wedding to feel. Out of that developed this idea to have designated escort card secret agents walk around to guests and ask them "Psst, what's your name?" and then reveal the secret file of names inside their jackets. I think this was also an excuse for the Escort Agents to talk to some of their very pretty single girl guests :).

Hmmm, this photo could look like something else if you didn't know.

Good work, men. Everyone found their seats.

This picture looks like an ad. One of my favs!

The color of the water at twilight. It truly was heaven on earth.

3-D Chandeliers from Urban outfitter were shipped out to Italy from NY.

HELPFUL TIP: They worked great for our event for several reasons: 1) classic chandelier look with a very contemporary twist 2) very affordable at about $36 dollars each 3) shipped flat and the two pieces could easily be assembled in Italy.

MOMA Ghost Candelabras were shipped from NY and like the chandeliers were easily shipped flat and assembled in Italy. We had a custom teal table runner down the center of both long European style dinner tables.

HELPFUL TIP: The chairs, the linens, the candles, the everything were in white with only small touches of the teal runner and these pashminas. It just goes to show that the slightest color can be very potent. No need to overdose on a color to get it across.

BORROW THIS IDEA: Menu=place cards=personal letters.
Each guest found a personal letter in their napkin at their place which also help them find their seats. Also in the letter was a thank you note the couple wrote to them. At the end of each note the couple described in detail the amazing Italian cuisine they were in store for.

BORROW THIS IDEA: Instead of having a guest book laid out on a table for guests to stop by and sign it was instead passed around the dinner table which provided some fun dinner time activity as well. It was no ordinary guest book but rather a polariod picture album. A Polariod camera was sent around the table along with the album and guests took pictures of themselves and wrote lengthy messages to the couple. Along with some champagne, I had one camera ready for the bride and groom in their bridal suite for their few minutes alone after the ceremony. They took a few shots of themselves which I then slipped into the cover of each album before passing it around to guests. 2 of their jokester male friends replaced one of those cover pictures with a "romantic" picture of themselves.

BORROW THIS IDEA: I hate to promote smoking but if they're going to smoke anyways I might as well make them match the wedding and look chic doing it with these cigarette holders.

I had the lighting company hang the lights at a diagonal for something a little different, contemporary and fresh.
HELPFUL TIP: When working with a destination wedding (especially if you speak different languages) pictures and sketches are very clarifying and helpful.

BORROW THIS IDEA: The couple recently purchased their first home together and had extra rolls of a wallpaper that lined the hallway of their home and it has become a very recognizable part of their home decor and one their friends definitely associate with the couple's home. In an attempt to bring a part of their home to Italy I suggested we hang panels of their wallpaper around the tent. To do this we simply taped the wallpaper to the metal frame and then let it roll down to the floor. You can use this idea with any wallpaper, meaning or no meaning, to spruce up your tent.

The groom gave THE most heartwarming and charming speech to his family and bride...

...and with a firework ending over Lake Como!

The guests ran to the terrace and watched big-eyed and hearts swelling. The girl with her head on her shoulder sums up the feeling.

And they danced the night away!

Let's rewind now to some of the other events for their wedding.

The bride wore traffic stopping Oscar de la Renta dress to the Friday rehearsal dinner. The groom in Ralph Lauren.

Rewinding even further before guests even left for Lake Como, we sent each guest a travel guide to Italy.

Wrapped and tied with a simple red ribbon, the tag read "for italy."

We inserted a bookmark that read "see you here." on the Lake Como page and put a "D & A special edition" sticker on the cover.

BORROW THIS IDEA: When doing a destination wedding, I love to send the guests a little something to get them excited not only about the wedding but the trip.

Guests found a whole bag of goodies in their rooms when they arrived but I think the flip book that was a guide to Lake Como and the wedding weekend was a highlight. We included the "slideshow" of images in this flip book and also this map of all the wedding activities. The map was another amazing job by Make Merry! Designs.

Katherine and Hadley - Palm Beach, FL

Katherine and Hadley are a couple from NY who chose a destination wedding in Palm Beach, FL. Typically destination weddings are small, intimate occasions but not for this popular couple who had nearly 200 people fly in for their nuptial weekend!

The weekend kicked off at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden for the Friday night Welcome Party. This venue is a gem! Not only is it the actual home of famed sculptress Ann Norton but her works are actually still there. It's an amazing backdrop for a photo shoot!

We hired private trolleys for the entire weekend to transport guests from their hotels to the parties.

This was a great venue for our Friday night event but any of you couples looking to have a smaller wedding in Florida, check out Ann Norton Sculpture Garden. It is so charming and the people who run it, the friendliest!

I wish there was a way I could bottle up how gorgeous and perfect the wedding day weather was and have you all feel it. The best I can do are these slew of pictures!

BORROW THIS IDEA: Pass notes to each other before the wedding! Take a moment and jot down a few words to each other just before you meet. Communication is usually limited that morning between the bride and groom so a few words can mean volumes.

As the rsvp yes's came in we sent out each guest a box which included a helpful weekend guide book, Palm Beach County tourist pamphlets, vouchers for Sunday brunch and a nice little palm tree to get guests in the Palm Beach state of mind.

BORROW THIS IDEA: Goodie Bags in the room when guests arrive are nice and all but I like mailing out information and a small gift to guests before they arrive. I prefer this way for various reasons: 1) it's one less thing for you to do the day or so before your wedding 2) for a destination wedding it gives your guests information BEFORE they arrive so they can plan the rest of their time there and know what to expect 3) it gets people excited about the upcoming event! The cost of mailing is comparable with hotel gift bag drop off fees so why not!

Make Merry! created these flower pins and matching ring bearer "pillow" from vintage fabrics and jewelry. They went perfectly with the girl's dresses!

I love getting a copy of the day's newspaper for the couple to keep and see what was going on in the world on the day they got married. We grabbed a local PB and NY newspaper to show this couple's duel residency. (And yes, you caught me, this wedding is not that recent it was last year. In fact I'm working on their baby's christening party! )

The couple and their guests stayed at the breathtaking and historic hotel at The Breakers. What an incredible place!

The ceremony was held at the historic St. Ann's Catholic Church in West Palm Beach. This is the oldest church in Palm Beach as well as the Church the Kennedy's attended.

If you're looking for a vintage car in S. Florida, look no further! Ragtops has them ALLLL!

The reception was held at the Flagler Museum in Palm Beach. Once the home to Henry M. Flagler, the man who founded Palm Beach and is considered the father of Florida for connecting the railroads down the East Coast. Very fittingly, this home was built as a wedding gift to his wife.

BORROW THIS IDEA: Instead of a guest book, we created little notecards that had the prompt "Dear Katherine and Hadley, On your first anniversary I wish you..." Each card was dated 3/7/10 and a year later on their first anniversary the couple got to open up these notecards and read their messages!

Atelier Isabey who designed the invitations lent us their monogram file so that we could design and print the escort cards ourselves...at Kinko's!!!

BORROW THIS IDEA: Since we were going to print them ourselves we thought hey why not make them as big as we want. So there's a multi-step process to how we made these. We printed the design onto nice resume paper so it would have a refined feel to it but that was obviously too flimsy to stand on it's own so glued them down to card stock and then had them cut to size.

As a surprise, on the couple's escort cards I put a sticker of a cocker spaniel that resembled their new little puppy who couldn't make the trip to Palm Beach.

We alternated rectangular tables with 2 tall candelabras and round tables with these decadent crystal lamps. Custom lilac linens with accents of BLING, from the table number frames, to the votive candle holders yet kept everything still very delicate and lady like.

HELPFUL TIP: As decadent as these tables were we still managed to keep the costs down slightly by opting to do big balls of baby's breathe which have great volume at a fraction of the cost of how much an arrangement of flowers of that size would cost.

Just as we custom printed the escort cards so did we for these combo menus and place cards. At the top of each menu we printed the name of the guest.

Never have a met a groom with a bigger sweet tooth! We had this floating dessert station with just about every dessert you could imagine along with cupcakes wrapped in little choo choo train cupcake wrappers. That was our nod to the actual train in the room. After all this was the Flagler Museum, home of the founder of the Florida East Coast Railway.

Just outside the reception room there was a patio that we created an inviting lounge. So inviting that almost the entire wedding was hanging out there all night! We can't blame them though. Most of them just flew in from chilly NY and on a balmy night like that it'd be a shame to spend it inside!

Inside Weddings features Ann + Abbas's wedding invitations

Ann + Abbas worked with the lovely ladies at East Six to come up with this beautiful 9-piece invitation set featured in the Summer issue of Inside Weddings.

My favorite part of this invitation set had to be the belly band which had a Rumi quote chosen by the groom. "My sun has risen." One side was written in English and the other in Farsi.

This invitation set was inspired by many factors including Ann's favorite color pink, swatches of Ann's traditional Pakistani wedding dress, her gorgeous jewelry set and a variety of cultural artifacts and themes.

See it all come together on this inspiration board East Six put together. See how everything weaved together from the attire which lead to the invitation which lead to the cake which lead to.... etc.

Rent the Runway for your Bridesmaids Dresses

Let's be honest. They're not going to wear those dresses again. And with the average bridesmaid dress ranging from $200-300 that can be a lot to ask some friends to drop on a dress that they'll be giving to Goodwill shortly after.

My advice, consider renting the dress and not just any dress but a designer dress. Sites like RenttheRunway.com offer several high fashion dresses at a fraction of its original cost. The rental rates vary but will be comparable if not less to buying an ordinary bridesmaid dress and ladies will look glam!

Sarah Joy and David's wedding has received a lot of press and rightfully so! Not only was theirs a beautiful wedding but David is one of the members of Il Divo. First People.com and then InStyle Weddings but I have to say Style Me Pretty did the best job and showed the photos that really captured the day. Muah and thanks, Abby and crew at SMP :)
